Best African Safari Destinations

Just a 2.5-hour drive from Nairobi, in Kenya, Ol Pejeta Conservancy emerges as a gem among African safari destinations. Spanning a vast 360 square kilometers.  As a seasoned traveler to numerous safari destinations, Ol Pejeta holds a special place in my heart, offering an array of wildlife sightings, engaging activities, and dedicated conservation efforts that cater to safari enthusiasts of all ages.

Wildlife Galore

Ol Pejeta Conservancy boasts an impressive array of wildlife,  proudly hosting the iconic “Big Five” – lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo. Home to over 100 species of mammals, Grevy’s zebra, and the rare reticulated giraffe, the conservancy is also a haven for birdwatchers with over 400 bird species. Notably, Ol Pejeta is home to East Africa’s largest black rhino sanctuary as well as white rhinos and home to  the last two remaining northern white rhinos on the planet.

Activities

Beyond traditional safaris, Ol Pejeta offers a plethora of activities to take part in. Visit the chimpanzee sanctuary, home to over 40 rescued chimpanzees. Join Ol Pejeta’s anti-poaching canine unit. Guests learn about the training the dogs undergo to become anti-poaching patrollers, then play a game of human-canine hide and seek, trying to dodge the canines and finding a spot to hide within the Morani Information Centre.

Guests can also spend time with the conservancy’s researchers to track and learn more about the lions in the  Conservancy and help gather important research information needed to monitor the lions. This is a fun and unique opportunity for guests to contribute towards lion conservation within the conservancy.

For horse lovers, you can ride on a horse within the Predator-free Endangered Species Enclosure.

For the younger explorers, they can join the Ranger Programme for an educational adventure

For fitness and adventure enthusiasts, there is no better run than a 5 to 7 km route on the Ol Pejeta plains with the armed rangers. You’ll get a good idea of what it’s like to train to be a ranger and a great appreciation of their commitment and duties. The run follows gentle terrain in the morning breeze and there is a chance that you will see all sorts of wildlife and big game such as elephants and rhinos.

One of the most amazing activities is the rare opportunity to encounter the last remaining northern white rhinos on the planet, named Najin and Fatu. This unique experience not only allows you to witness these prehistoric-looking animals up close but also provides insight into the conservation history of these endangered species and the formidable challenges they confront.

I had the  privilege of meeting Najin and Fatu. It was quite a surreal experience, being in their presence especially with the realization that only two of their kind remain.

Conservation Education

Ol Pejeta’s conservation efforts at the Morani Information Center, a museum and education hub showcasing the history and culture of the local Maasai community. The conservancy actively engages in community outreach programs, fostering education and healthcare initiatives for local communities. Guests can actively participate in these programs, gaining insight into the integral role conservation plays in supporting and sustaining local communities.

Accommodations

The great thing about Ol Pejeta is that it offers various accommodation options from budget to luxury. Each option provides a unique blend of comfort and immersion in the natural beauty of the surroundings.

I stayed at Ol Pejeta Bush Camp which was a great choice. It has seven spacious, eco-friendly tents that are located along the Ewaso Ngiro River where wildlife can be spotted. The camp is staffed by a friendly and attentive team.

Conclusion

Ol Pejeta Conservancy stands as a must-visit safari destination, harmonizing wildlife conservation, engaging activities, and community support. Whether you’re a wildlife enthusiast, a family with young adventurers, or a fitness enthusiast seeking a unique experience, Ol Pejeta promises an extraordinary safari adventure that leaves an indelible mark on your heart and soul.
