The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy (also known as Lewa Downs) in northern Kenya is a UNESCO World Heritage Site established in 1995. Just a 90-minute flight from Nairobi, Lewa offers an extraordinary blend of breathtaking scenery and abundant wildlife. In the whole conservancy, there are only five other camps, so you won’t encounter the crowds like at some other safari destinations.
I visited during the wetter season, which is not typically considered the best time for wildlife viewing. However, the lush green landscape was stunning, and there was still an abundance of wildlife. I encountered both black and white rhinos, elephants, reticulated giraffes, both species of zebras, lions, , ostriches, and many other animals.
A unique aspect of Lewa is the opportunity to visit the Conservancy headquarters, meet the anti-poaching team, and learn about the behind-the-scenes operations of the conservancy. When you visit Lewa, you’re not just having a great time—you’re playing a crucial role in protecting wildlife and habitats. Many of the animals you see at Lewa are not commonly found in other safari destinations, and the conservancy excels in wildlife protection.
What Makes Lewa Conservancy Stand Out?
Black Rhino Conservation: The black rhino population in Kenya dropped from over 20,000 in 1970 to fewer than 350 by the end of the 1980s due to relentless poaching. Thanks to conservation efforts at places like Lewa, their numbers are rebounding.
Endangered Grevy’s Zebra: Lewa is one of the few places where you can see the endangered Grevy’s zebra, with fewer than 2,400 individuals left in Kenya and small pockets in Ethiopia.
Reticulated Giraffe: Often considered the most beautiful of all giraffe species, the reticulated giraffe is listed as endangered. With their limited distribution across northern Kenya, southern Somalia, and Ethiopia, Lewa offers a rare opportunity to see these stunning animals.
Accommodation
I stayed at Lewa House, centrally located on the 250 km² Conservancy. Perched atop a hill with panoramic views of the surrounding hilly savannahs, it offers a truly intimate experience. With only ten rooms, Lewa House is owner-operated and hosted, providing personal attention that feels like staying at a friend’s house. The open lounge area features a cozy fireplace lit at night, and there’s a lovely pool for a refreshing dip during the heat of the day.
Their pet horses roam the beautiful grounds, and there is also a gift shop with an array of beautiful and pricey gifts, from jewelry and cushion covers to artwork. The spacious cottage-style rooms are spread along the hillside, each with a private deck offering breathtaking views of the conservancy. I particularly enjoyed the deck’s shade, which allowed me to relax outside even during the heat of the day.
Lewa House is run by solar power and features an organic farm where they grow their own fruits, herbs, and vegetables. I took a tour of the farm and was impressed by their commitment to sustainability. They cater to different dietary needs—I’m vegan, and the food they prepared was delicious.
