Malawi is one of Africa’s best-kept safari secrets, ideal for travelers seeking something different from a traditional safari. Known as the Warm Heart of Africa for the exceptional friendliness, hospitality, and welcoming nature of its people, the country also offers beautiful landscapes and a sense of discovery that is increasingly rare in modern travel.
Expect the chance to see conservation at work and experiences that reveal the many sides of Malawi. From restored national parks to historic estates and one of the world’s great freshwater lakes, Malawi offers a distinctive and authentic way to experience Africa.
Welcome to Malawi. On arrival at Chileka International Airport, you will be met by a representative from King Salama Safaris and transferred to Mkulumadzi Lodge, set within Majete Wildlife Reserve, one of Africa’s great conservation success stories. You will spend the next three nights here.
Your stay offers a range of rewarding experiences, including expertly guided safari drives, bush walks, cultural visits, game viewing from a hide, and excursions to the nearby Elephant Marsh. For something truly memorable, the lodge’s star deck can also be reserved for an overnight sleepout beneath the African sky.
Majete Wildlife Reserve, covering approximately 700 square kilometres in south-western Malawi, is a diverse landscape of rolling hills, grassy plains, river systems, and mixed woodlands.
The reserve has undergone one of the most impressive wildlife recoveries on the continent through the work of African Parks. Once depleted, it is now home to the Big Five, along with elephant, giraffe, hippo, crocodile, sable antelope, kudu, Lichtenstein’s hartebeest, and African wild dog. Birdlife is equally rewarding, with notable species including the African pitta and racket-tailed roller, making Majete one of Malawi’s standout safari destinations.

Welcome to Satemwa Tea Estate. This morning, enjoy your final safari activity in Majete Wildlife Reserve before transferring to the lush Shire Highlands of southern Malawi. Surrounded by rolling tea fields and mountain views, you will continue to Huntingdon House, your elegant home for the next two nights.
Your stay here offers a refined and slower-paced contrast to safari life. Enjoy guided walks through the tea and coffee plantations, learn about the estate’s production process, visit the coffee factory, and take part in tea tastings featuring some of Malawi’s finest blends. Guests can also relax on the lawns, play croquet, enjoy the gardens, or simply take in the peaceful surroundings.
For memorable views, head to the estate’s picnic spot for sundowners overlooking the valleys and distant mountains. More active guests may choose a day trip to Mount Mulanje, famous for its granite peaks, waterfalls, and hiking trails. In the evening, return to the house for a home-cooked dinner followed by a tea or coffee-inspired cocktail beside the fire in the drawing room.
Satemwa Tea Estate is one of Malawi’s most historic estates, with nearly a century of producing exceptional teas and coffees exported around the world. Today, alongside its classic range, the estate is also known for a unique artisanal collection of green, white, oolong, black, and dark teas.
Production here is guided by a strong commitment to quality, sustainability, and community.

Welcome to Liwonde National Park. Today you will be transferred to the banks of the Shire River, where you will be met by the staff of Kuthengo Camp and transferred by boat to your home for the next four nights. On arrival, settle into your room and enjoy time to relax before heading out that afternoon on your first safari activity to explore the wildlife-rich landscapes of Liwonde. Return to camp in time to freshen up before an al fresco dinner and stories around the campfire.
Rise early for your morning activity, choosing from expertly guided game drives, walking safaris, or scenic boat safaris along the river. After your adventure, cool off in the swimming pool, enjoy birdwatching from your private deck, or simply unwind before lunch.
Afternoons are ideal for a siesta, reading by the pool, or relaxing before setting out on your evening safari as the light softens across the floodplains. Return to camp for dinner beneath the stars and another peaceful night in the bush.
Liwonde National Park covers approximately 550 square kilometres of diverse wilderness along the Shire River, south of Lake Malawi. Often regarded as one of Malawi’s finest safari destinations, it combines beautiful river scenery, rich biodiversity, and relatively low visitor numbers.
The park is known for excellent wildlife viewing, including one of the country’s most important elephant populations, along with hippo, crocodile, buffalo, zebra, antelope, and thriving birdlife with more than 300 recorded species. Predators, including lion, cheetah, and African wild dog, have also been successfully reintroduced.
Liwonde’s revival has been driven by the conservation work of African Parks, whose efforts in anti-poaching, habitat restoration, and species reintroductions have transformed the park into one of Africa’s emerging conservation success stories.

Welcome to Lake Malawi. Situated on the western side of the Nankumba Peninsula at the southern end of the lake, Pumulani Lodge is subtly nestled among lush hills, trees, and dramatic rocky outcrops. This beautiful lakeside retreat will be your home as you unwind in one of Africa’s most scenic and unique settings.
Your stay offers the perfect balance of relaxation and adventure. Experiences and activities include limited snorkeling, fishing, sailing, nature walks, kayaking, sunset cruises on a dhow, mountain bike tours, and village tours. Motorized watersports such as diving, waterskiing, fun tubing, and snorkeling excursions are available at an additional cost. Whether on the water or on land, this is an ideal place to slow down and enjoy Malawi’s natural beauty.
Lake Malawi is one of Africa’s greatest natural wonders and one of the world’s deepest lakes, stretching through the Great Rift Valley. It was also the very first freshwater national park declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984.
The lake is globally significant for conservation, particularly for its extraordinary diversity of cichlid fish. Hundreds of species are found here, many of them endemic and found nowhere else on earth. Known locally as mbuna, these colourful fish are considered one of the clearest examples of evolution and adaptive radiation in the natural world.
