Lake Malawi

Located at the southern end of the great expanse of Lake Malawi, this area is of global importance for biodiversity conservation, particularly because of its remarkable fish diversity. Lying within the Western Rift Valley, Lake Malawi is one of the deepest lakes in the world and was the very first freshwater national park declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984.

The lake is home to many hundreds of cichlid fish, nearly all of which are endemic to Lake Malawi and known locally as mbuna. These fish are an important example of biological evolution. Because Lake Malawi has remained isolated from other water bodies, its fish have developed through impressive adaptive radiation and speciation, making the lake an outstanding example of ecological processes.
