9 INCREDIBLE ACTIVITIES TO DO ON SAFARI IN KENYA

1. RUN IN THE WILD

If you are a fitness enthusiast and you love the outdoors, there is no better way to start your day than with a run in Ol Pejeta Conservancy with the conservancy’s rangers. Join them as they take on a 5 – 7km run which follows gentle terrain across the plains. During your run, there is also a chance you may encounter wildlife such as rhinos and elephants.

2. VISIT RETETI A REMOTE COMMUNITY RUN ELEPHANT SANCTUARY

Visiting Reteti is a truly authentic experience, it is the first Kenyan community-run facility that rescues orphaned and abandoned elephant calves, with the aim to release them back into the wild. The drive to the Sanctuary takes you through spectacular scenery. 

You will be paired with a keeper who will show you the behind-the-scenes running of the sanctuary. The highlight is the feeding time of these rambunctious calves, and you will also have the chance to meet any other wildlife that has been rescued, and now resides at the sanctuary.

3. HOT AIR BALLOON RIDE OVER THE MAASAI MARA

Enjoy a birds-eye view of the African wildlife as you float effortlessly over the Maasai Mara Reserve at sunrise in a hot-air balloon.

Masai Mara National Reserve is the ultimate ballooning destination. The landscape is stunning and the wildlife can make for spectacular viewings from above. You can typically see a good diversity of animals, and you will likely spot elephants, giraffes, various antelope species, and ostriches from the balloon. Some guests also see hyenas, lions, and cheetahs. Depending on the day’s flight path, you may also drift along with one of the rivers and see hippos and crocodiles.

4. VISIT AN AUTHENTIC MAASAI OR SAMBURU VILLAGE

As you pass through the Kenyan landscape you will notice the striking Maasai and Samburu people who are known for their brightly colored traditional clothing and intricate beaded jewelry.

Visiting their village will give you an intimate insight into their traditional way of life that is so drastically different from our lifestyle.

The Maasai inhabit southern Kenya and northern Tanzania, near many of the most popular game parks, while the Samburu live in north-central Kenya, above the Equator. Both speak slightly different versions of the ‘Maa’ language.

7. INTERACT WITH THE CANINES OF AN ANTI-POACHING TEAM

At Ol Pejeta Conservancy’s anti-poaching canine unit, guests will Interact with the keepers, and learn about the training these canines undergo to become anti-poaching patrollers, you can play a game of human-canines hide and seek, trying to dodge the canines and finding a spot to hide within the Morani Information Centre. This is a fun way to interact with the dogs.

8. WAlKING SAFARI

Nothing is quite like exploring the African bush on foot. Not only will you be able to view animals such as elephants, zebras, and giraffes from a different perspective, you’ll also notice the smaller animals, and learn about the flora, and fauna.
Walking safaris are completely safe and only require a low fitness level. You will be accompanied by a professional ranger and guide, who will be able to explain the sights and sounds of the African bush.
