May to October – Cool Dry Season
This is the best time to visit Malawi, with dry conditions, lower humidity, and comfortable temperatures. Days are generally sunny, and wildlife viewing improves as vegetation thins and animals gather around water sources, particularly in national parks such as Liwonde and Majete. This season is ideal for safaris, hiking, and exploring Lake Malawi.
November – Hot Shoulder Season
November marks the transition into the rainy season. Temperatures rise, and the landscape begins to turn green as the first rains arrive. Wildlife is still visible, though animals may be more dispersed. Visitor numbers are lower during this period, making it a good option for travelers seeking fewer crowds.
December to March – Wet Season
This is Malawi’s main rainy season, characterized by warm temperatures and regular rainfall, often in short but heavy bursts. The countryside becomes lush and vibrant, and birdlife is at its best, with many migratory species present. Some remote lodges may close during this period, and wildlife viewing can be more challenging due to dense vegetation.
April – End of the Rains
April marks the end of the wet season, with rainfall decreasing and landscapes remaining green. Roads and parks begin to reopen, and conditions gradually improve for travel. This is a quieter time to visit, offering scenic beauty and a transition into the dry season.
