From an early age, Karoline Hood’s fascination with African wildlife was inspired by the legendary Sir David Attenborough, whose dedication to nature ignited a lifelong passion. As Karoline grew older, this admiration evolved into a deep concern for the preservation of endangered species, the protection of habitats, and the impact we leave on the world for future generations.
In 2008, Karoline’s journey in conservation began with her travels across Africa. She volunteered with leading wildlife organizations, working firsthand to protect wildlife and restore vital ecosystems. Through these experiences, she became even more committed to the mission of ensuring that Africa’s wildlife thrives in its natural habitats for generations to come.

Her commitment led her to create Warriors of Malama, a platform that celebrates the everyday heroes who dedicate their lives to protecting wildlife. Inspired by the Hawaiian word Malama—meaning “to take care of, protect, and preserve”—Karoline’s blog and podcast have become spaces for sharing powerful stories of those at the forefront of conservation. Through interviews with diverse conservationists, she sheds light on the challenges, triumphs, and untold stories from the field.
This passion for Africa’s wildlife, people, and culture ultimately led Karoline to found King Salama Safaris. The name Salama, meaning “safe” in Swahili and peace, safety, security, or well-being in Arabic, embodies Karoline’s vision of creating safe, peaceful spaces for both wildlife and people. Through King Salama Safaris, she designs custom eco-conscious safari experiences that give guests an intimate and sustainable connection with Africa’s wildlife, while directly supporting local communities and conservation initiatives.
With over a decade of experience in African wildlife conservation and travel, Karoline is not only a passionate advocate for the continent’s natural beauty but a trusted expert committed to delivering unforgettable, meaningful safari experiences.
