Nestled within Nairobi National Park, The Emakoko offers a luxurious retreat amid an abundant array of wildlife. What sets this location apart is that it’s the only national park within a capital city. Established in 1946 as Kenya’s first national park, it spans 45 square miles and serves as a sanctuary for a diverse wildlife population, including leopards, lions, giraffes, zebras, and hyenas. It is also renowned as one of the prime spots to observe the endangered black and white rhinos. The park is fenced on three sides, with its open southern boundary allowing wildlife to migrate freely between the park and the adjacent Kitengela plains.
Initially, the concept of a national park in the heart of a city seemed less than appealing to me. The sight of city skyscrapers on the horizon and a railroad bridge cutting through the park suggested a diluted African bush experience. However, my stay at The Emakoko changed my perspective.

Located at the edge of Nairobi National Park and accessible by a swing bridge, The Emakoko offers spacious rooms with stunning wilderness views. Within the lodge’s confines, you’re completely insulated from the hustle and bustle of Nairobi, one of the world’s busiest cities.
The meals were delicious, and often sourced directly from the lodge’s own organic garden. One memorable evening, as we dined, we could hear the distant roars of lions and we had a visit from the resident bush baby. It felt quite surreal as we were surrounded by nature and wild animals but still in a populated capital city.
The lodge’s bartender introduced me to the “Dawa,” a classic Kenyan cocktail whose name translates to “medicine” in Swahili. This variation was made with muddled limes, gingerbeer vodka, and honey. It’s typically enjoyed as a natural remedy for colds. Here, they claim to serve the best Dawa.
With accommodation limited to 24 guests, or up to 29 when children are included, The Emakoko ensures an exclusive and serene experience.

Additionally, the lodge’s location makes it an ideal base for exploring Nairobi’s top attractions, including the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, and the Giraffe Centre, as well as local art galleries, museums, and vibrant nightlife.
My initial skepticism has changed, as The Emakoko and Nairobi National Park together offer a certain appeal as you have the African safari experience with the conveniences of city proximity.
